CLARE GO DOWN FIGHTING

LIMERICK 3   CLARE 2

An exciting game played in very poor weather conditions, with rain falling throughout. The pitch was however in excellent condition. Limerick were on attack early and forced a number of corners on both right and left, Clare defence with Trevor O'Donnell in goal, defended well and were unlucky not to score when a break put Derek Fahy clear on the right, but his shot was saved by the keeper.

The home side went in front in the 24th minute when Alan Barry headed a cross from the left to the net. At half time Limerick lead 1 nil. Limerick increased their lead in the 51st minute when Mike Behan flicked the ball to the net following a corner from the right. Clare continued to battle and were rewarded in the 59th minute when Kieran Neenan was taken down in the area, Ref awarded a penalty and Davy Ryan stuck the ball low to the keeper left into the net.

Clare piled on the pressure, but failed to get the equaliser that their play deserved. A break by Limerick in the 66th minute let Barry in for a short that came back off the post and in a crowded area, Alan Carroll scored from 6 yards. Limerick were rocked minutes later when a well struck free by Brendan Rochford was only parried by keeper, the ball ran loose and Derek Fahy lashed it to the net. From this to final whistle Clare chased for the equaliser but could not break down Limerick's defence.
