Under 14's into Cup Final

UNDER 14 CUP FINAL

Bridge United 2-1 Avenue United

Our under 14 team completed a remarkable league and cup double beating 1st division champions Avenue on Saturday last. From the kickoff the Bridge side were dominant and in truth never looked like losing the game. However it was not until the stroke of half time that a breakthrough was made when a corner from man of the match Sean Lynch was headed home by Paul O'Rourke.

Avenue started the 2nd half brightly but soon the Bridge took control of the midfield battle once more with Kieran Quinlan & Alan Mulready on top form. On 55 minutes Bridge scored a second when captain Quinlan popped up in the box to hammer home the second. This sparked huge celebrations but also sparked an Avenue revival. Our back four marshalled by Darren Murphy were on top form, Terence Lenihan quiet but extremely effective at centre half was first to every ball and Eoin Hogan a rock at right full.

Some brilliant interplay between Dara Fitzgearld and Seadna Morey caused Avenue all sorts of problems on the right hand side and Bridge looked like they would push on for a third. Mark Hehir's no nonsense approach earned him a booking in the final moments but overall he was very effective in breaking up the play in midfield.

John Mulready in goals showed a safe pair of hands all day and especially in the final quarter when Avenue were pushing strong. With almost the final kick of the game Avenue pulled one back but we saw out the game and recorded our first Cup success at Schoolboys level.

Congrats to all involved on a remarkable season!

Special thanks to managers Leo & Jimmy Murphy and to Brian Casey from Mcgregors Bar who sponsored a meal for the lads after the game.

Semi Final Report

Bridge Utd 4 Ennis Town 2

After winning the Division 2 League title, the Bridge showed what a superb team they are by ousting Division 1 opposition Ennis Town.

This was the second time they met opposition from the top division, as they had to account for Newmarket in the quarter final.

This game was played in very wintry conditions in Lees Road with the Bridge having the advantage of a strong wind in the first half.

Pressure was on to press home this advantage early, and indeed they did so 10 minutes in when Paul O Rourke pounced on a through ball, his rasping shot hit the bar and Seadna Morey was on hand to coolly tuck away the rebound in the corner of the net.

After 15 minutes Seadna Morey got his second after tremendous work by Darragh Fitzgerald who put him through with a precision pass.

Ennis Town were then given a life line when a shot from just inside the box beat John Mulready in the Bridge goals.

The Bridge made it three after 30 minutes after great interplay between Kieran Quinlan and Alan Mulready got Seadna Morey in to complete a brilliant hat trick.

After the restart Ennis Town threw everything at the Bridge to claw themselves back in the game but the resilient Bridge back line weren’t to be undone.

The Bridge fought hard to contain a quality Ennis Town side and probably against the run of play the Bridge went 4-1 up after 15 minutes when Mark Hehir slotted home from 10 yards after an expertly taken corner by Sean Lynch.

With 10 minutes remaining Ennis Town scored their second after a lapse the Bridge defence saw a shot from just inside the area went in off the post given John Mulready no chance.

This was the end of the scoring but not the drama in driving freezing rain both sides created chances.

Both sides deserve great credit for serving up a great game of football in very difficult conditions.

All the Bridge team and the subs played superbly, with special mention for Alan Mulready and Darren Murphy who were outstanding for the winners.
